Approximately one in five adults experience symptoms of mental illness, and this rate tends to be the highest among the young adults. The student-athletes are not an exception; the rate is about the same as their non-athlete peers (NCAA, 2017).
It is more than just well-known that proper help and adequate resources can reverse the symptoms and return the maximum performance outcome in athletes:
Student-athlete mental well-being is best served through a collaborative process of engaging the full complement of available campus and community resources, which may include athletics, campus health, counseling services, disability services and community agencies (NCAA, 2017).
On that note, are there services and resources in your coaching environment? What kinds of resources would you like to see more, that you think can be used for your athletes?
